MANILA, Philippines — An injured Olive Ridley sea turtle was rescued on Baseco beach in Manila yesterday, according to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

The DENR said a resident spotted the turtle struggling to swim on the shoreline.

Initial reports indicated that the turtle’s injuries may have resulted from a collision with a boat.

The Olive Ridley, one of five sea turtle species found in the Philippines, is classified as “vulnerable” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red list due to threats such as marine pollution, habitat destruction and illegal wildlife trade, according to the DENR.

The sea turtle, weighing 23.7 kilos, has been turned over to the Biodiversity Management Bureau of the Wildlife Rescue Center.
