Philippines joins labor conference in Geneva
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines is pushing stronger protection for platform workers and renewed action on gender equality as it participates in the 114th International Labor Conference in Geneva.
Organized by the International Labor Organization from June 1 to 12, the conference brings together governments, employers and workers from around the world to discuss key labor issues.
The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said the country’s participation was aligned with government efforts to safeguard the livelihood, dignity and welfare of Filipino workers.
The DOLE noted that platform-based work has opened new opportunities for employment, but also raised concerns on job security, social protection and fair working conditions.
“Workers’ dignity must remain at the center of our labor policies. Platform workers are workers; their contribution to the economy is real and the protection they receive must be real as well,” Labor Secretary Francis Tolentino said in a statement.
