Polan rules 2nd Bankal rapid chessfest

CEBU, Philippines — Reishi Boy Polan came out as champion of the 2nd Bankal Chess Club Rapid Tournament held recently at the Mercato de Mactan along Soong Road in Barangay Mactan, Lapu-Lapu City.

Polan completed the nine-round Swiss system competition with the highest outout of 8.5 points to claim the title and go home P4,000 richer.

Arena International Master Rogel Nino Panilagao, Janel Infante, Alberto Acabo, and Edwin Cablao figured in a four-way tie with 7.0 points but Panilagao pocketed the P3,000 second prize courtesy of a superior tiebreaker.

Infante, Acabo, and Cablao received P1,500, P1,000, and P700 for finishing third to fifth, respectively.

Rounding up the Top 10 were Roberto Calapan, Ralph Greval Dalauta, Joshua Panes, and Rengie Momo with 6.5 points and Neal Amores with 6.0 points.

On the other hand, the top individual performers were Carlos Moreno III (senior 55-above), Daren Corro (10 Under),  Triton Blue Ares Garcia (12 Under), Edgar Tampus Jr. (Bankal category), and Amarra Therese Otarra (female).

Organized by Bankal Chess Club executive director Stephen M. Rosales and Jonathan Mendola, the one-day tilt that drew 105 entries was made possible through the support of the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (CEPCA) headed by Engr. Jerry Maratas, Rosales Rental, Mercato de Mactan, Event Asia, TESDA-7 Regional Director Engr. Vicente Gamaliel Jr., Meverett Water Refilling Station, and Marjaztin Glass, Trading & Construction.
