CEBU, Philippines — Two young but promising US-based Cebuano martial artists have started to carve their own niche in the field of jiu-jitsu.

Brothers Jared and Jansen Tan, who trace their roots from Barangay Tisa in Cebu City, stamped their respective classes in the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2023 at the Mubadala Arena in Abu Dhabi,  United Arab Emirates recently.

The eight-year-old Jared fought with finesse to grab gold medal in the 30kg category, while his older brother Jansen, 10, finished third in a field of 19 contenders to settle for bronze in the infant (27kg) weight class.

“I trained so hard for this tournament and I’m very happy to win the gold because my hardwork paid off,” said Jared.

Jansen is similarly ecstatic of the success he attained.

“Though it wasn’t the result I wanted , I’m still happy because I gave my all on the mat. I’m so grateful to be in the podium,” shared Jansen.

The Tan siblings are trained by professor Taniel “Abu” Jesus at the Nature Brazilian Jiujitsu Academy based in Sanford, North Carolina.

They both aspire to become one of the elite and known black belters someday. – EBV
