Cobras tame Warriors to bag second straight basketball title in one week
CEBU, Philippines – The Southwestern University Cobras reaffirmed their mastery over the University of San Carlos, but they had to pass through the wringer before pulling off a 68-66 squeaker over the Warriors, in their sudden-death final match to clinch the championship of the 10th Asian Universities Basketball Championship (AUBC)-Cebu Province International Collegiate Cup last Sunday night at the Cebu City Sports Institute gym in Barangay Sawang Calero, Cebu City.
Cameronian banger Landry Sanjo charted 18 points to romp off with the MVP trophy. Jasper Parker and Mark Jayven Tallo chipped in 17 and 16 markers, respectively, for the Cobras, who notched their second straight title in just a one-week span. They tamed the same rivals last October 19 to win the 2014 CESAFI collegiate basketball championship – their second in four straight final appearances.
Despite the loss, the Warriors could still hold their heads up high as they gamely recovered from a 20-point deficit, 31-51, midway in the third period. They could have even send the game into overtime had Shooter Olago made both his charities in the closing seconds of the contest. Olago finished with 16 points in a losing effort for the Carolinians.
Earlier, Myongji University of Seoul, South Korea displayed another stellar outside shooting to outgun the University of the Visayas Green Lancers, 73-70, and claim the third place honors. (GGM) (FREEMAN)
