QCU FC outguns Leylam in Aboitiz bootfest

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Playing without their head coach Mario Ceniza wasn't a problem for defending champion Queen City United as it still outlasted Team Leylam, 2-0, in group C of the premiere men's open division of the 16th Aboitiz Cup football tournament last Sunday at the Aboitiz Sports Field in Brgy. Subangdaku, Mandaue City.

The games were delayed a bit due to the scorching heat of  the sun, but it did not dampen the spirits of the QCU booters. They also played sans Ceniza, who was on-leave yesterday to attend to some pressing matters.

After a scoreless first half, Allan Medalle, who took charge of the team in the absence of  Ceniza, ably made the necessary adjustments and QCU went on to punch two goals while leaving Leylam scoreless with their porous defense.

Junard Aguilar broke the ice of the match for QCU at the 55th, then Rommel Quizon found the back of the net 14 minutes later.

In the other men's open duel, the University of Cebu dumped Crazy Horse, 5-0, under group B.

QCU's 38-above team was just as eager to move up to the next round after silencing Hipodromo FC, 5-0.

Michael Rick Baring completed a hat-trick for QCU at 27th, 43th and 49th, while Egar Quitor and Neon Ouano delivered the remaining goals at the 37th and 61st, respectively.

The other 38-above action saw JEH United winning against Hiroshi, 1-0.

In the lone under-23 match, Don Bosco Technology Center crushed Subangdaku FC, 3-0. (FREEMAN)
