Night of upsets in CECABA: ACY Shipping 2006 stuns Class ‘94; JV Shop ‘97 edges Jepoy ‘99

CEBU, Philippines - First ACY Shipping 2006 ended its five-game slump in style, pulling off a 46-44 squeaker over the heavily favored Las Vegas KTV/M16 Disco '94 in what is by far the biggest upset in the Cebu Eastern College Alumni Basketball Association's 12th Dr. Chen Lieh Fu Memorial Cup last Friday night at the CEC Gym.

Likewise, the struggling JV Shop n Shop '97 caught everyone by surprise after it humiliated Jepoy '99 via a 60-49 decision.

It was a match that nobody had given Class 2006 a chance to win as they are ranged against one of the league's strong contenders. But the ball is round, so they say.

Junwynn Dy stepped up bigtime with 19 points on top of seven rebounds, three assists and three steals as he almost singlehandedly carry Class 2006 to its first victory of the season.

Class 2006 held off Class '94 to only four points in the first quarter and then fought with sheer guts the rest of the way to baffle their foes at the final buzzer.

Jason Jao posted a season-high 11 points that went along with six rebounds and two assists but his big night was spoiled as Class '94 suffered its third loss in seven games.

In the other stunner, Aubrey Jones Ibones tallied a season-best 16 points, three rebounds and three steals as Class '97 scored its only second win in five starts.

Timothie Tan also had 16 points on top of two rebounds and two steals for Class '97, which breathe fire from the outset and sustained it for three quarters to mount an imposing 16-point bulge, 48-32, entering the final stretch.

Mark Eugene Bukiron tossed in 13 of his game-high 26 points in the last quarter, but could not bail Class '99 out of danger. He also hauled 12 rebounds and collected three steals but couldn't make any difference as they fell to 4-2
