CEBU, Philippines - With the completion of its sand court, Southwestern University (SWU) plans to hold a weekly or quarterly beach volley tournaments.
SWU athletic director Ryan Aznar said he came up with the idea because Cebu is noted for molding some of the country's top beach volley stars. At the same time, Aznar aims to produce more promising players from the Queen City of the South.
“My idea is to have a weekly pocket tournament, then to be followed by quarterly tournaments as one of our ways of promoting the sport in this part of the region,” said Aznar.
At the moment, Aznar said they are still on the planning stage with the school and the Cebu Volleyball Association (CEVA).
For now, the sand court has been used as practice venue for SWU players who are girding up for the 15th Nestea Beach Volley National Finals on April 19 to 21 in Boracay Island as well as in the National Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) that will be hosted by Cebu on April 22-28.
In a related development, Aznar said they will be forming their own men and women’s beach volley teams aside from their indoor volleyball squads. — (FREEMAN)
