Kids and sports
If you want to know more about getting your kids into sports, head to the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu this morning for KIDS or Keynote on Intelligence Diet and Sport of your Kid.
For an entrance fee of only P100, this event can teach students and parents alike on how to become better at both school and sports.
While national basketball team captain Chris Tiu could be the most popular in the line up of speakers, others really worth listening to are Sebastian ‘Eski’ Ripoll and his wife Christina as well as coach Jim Saret.
I would have wanted so much to attend this activity, but I am off to another part of the country for a golf event.
It is the dream of many parents to see their kids excel in both academics and sports, but achieving that is not easy.
After about eight hours of lessons, the kids start to practice for the varsity team maybe as early as 5 p.m. and in instances when there are competitions, they have to practice until 8 p.m.
How much time would they have left to do all their homework as the next day they again have to wake up very early for class?

Aside from problems with the time, there is also the matter of proper nutrition.
While we may be very conscious about the kind of food we let out kids have at home, we would have a hard time controlling what they eat in school.
Yes, there are efforts to ban junk food from the school canteens, but is that really happening?
Then there are injuries that they might sustain in the course of their participation in sports. While nobody wishes this, we should know how to react when such thing happens.
I have been a parent for more than 15 years now and have been there when my son was still actively involved in school sports.
We’ve encountered the problems I brought up above and there were times when I would not know what to do.
If only we live closer to the school, maybe I would be happy to see my kids more active with school sports, but the distance from our residence to the school would compound our problems with time and rest for the children so they just have to engage in sports on weekends.

I still look forward to days when we’d spend a few hours on the driving range and the golf course or those days that we spend biking in the trails near our residence.
If we don’t engage in sports, we probably sit and watch the same events as that is something that the lack of time, cannot take away from us.
Get your kids into sports. It can cost you some money, but it will teach them a lot and you will have much fun.
