Capitol exec says Ironman to boost Cebu tourism industry

CEBU, Philippines - The 2012 Ironman 70.3 Philippines, most probably the biggest international sporting event in Cebu for next year, is sure to boost the province’s tourism industry, Capitol spokesperson Rory Jon Sepulveda said.

Sepulveda said he has to reserve four hotels in Cebu for the expected 2,000 participants and their families. He estimated the number could even reach 3, 000 for that day alone.

“For the next three years, Cebu will host the event. This will be a major boost to Cebu's tourism industry,” said Sepulveda, adding that this is an opportune time for the province to place its best foot forward as they assist in the event in terms of logistical support.

Aside from the sports extravaganza, Sepulveda said the athletes have also requested four tours for their respective families.

In this regard, the Capitol spokesperson is requesting for assistance and cooperation from the different Local Government Units, agencies, and the entire Cebuano community.

“ Cebu has also to be aggressive if we want to have a fair share in sports tourism, which is a major segment in tourism industry,” Sepulveda said.

Sepulveda said the Ironman will also bring more awareness to Cebuanos of the three-in-one sport, which includes swimming, biking, and running.

“They will be able to witness world-class athletes,” he said.

Held in Camarines Sur during its first three years, next year's Ironman Philippines will be staged on August 5 at the Shangri-La Resort in Mactan Island. Registration formally started last December 1. (FREEMAN)
