Alvarez tops 100-kilometer ultramarathon

CEBU, Philippines - Out of the 160 hopefuls, Bayani Alvarez did not only survive but also established himself as the first champion of Cebu’s toughest ultramarathon so far, the Century Properties 100-kilometer Ultramarathon 2011 from Bogo to Cebu City.

Alvarez, who works at ABS-CBN, defeated the more experienced ultra-marathoners with his sheer determination and survival instinct.

Alvarez finished the lung-busting race in 11 hours and six minutes, way ahead from the cut-off time of 18 hours set forth by the organizers.

Enrique Mangas came in second with the time of 11:40.45 followed by Noel Tillor (11:58.07) and Kenji Yoshioka (12:05).

Since the race drew over 100 entries, Century Properties, the main backer of this frontRunner Magazine-organized event, will donate funds for the rehabilitation of the Pasig River. (FREEMAN)
