CEBU, Philippines - Former WBO super flyweight champion Marvin “Marvelous” Sonsona seeks for no less than redemption as he battles Mexican knockout artist Carlos “El Relampago” Jacobo tonight at the Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City.
Sonsona, who lost pride and glamour following his fourth round knockout loss to WBO super bantamweight champion Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr. on February 27, 2010, hopes to prove he is ready to pick up where he left off against Jacobo.
In a press conference yesterday at J Centre Mall along AS Fortuna Street in Mandaue City, Sonsona expressed his readiness to revive his once promising career.
The 21-year-old Sonsona thanked his promoter Sammy Gello-ani who didn’t give up despite the lapses he had done in the past.
“Andam na ko nga mobalik,” said Sonsona. “Pasalamat kayo ko ni Sir Sammy sa iyang gihatag nako nga chance ug akong paningkamoton aron makahatag ko og nindot nga performance.”
But Sonsona (14-1, 12KOs) faces a tough challenge against the WBC Fecombox bantamweight titlist Jacobo, who sports a 16-3 record spiked with 13KOs.
“Now we will see if Marvin is mature enough to continue his quest for greatness and to see if his really back, he got to fight a quality opponent,” said Gello-ani, who promised another big fight for his ward after he gets past Jacobo. “I can always get a big fight for him, so it all depends on him and his performance in this fight,” he added.
In the equally-exciting supporting bout, former WBO interim light flyweight champion Johnriel Casimero will face Roemart ‘TI Yamagata’ Sentillas, while Jessie Albaracin of Davao will defend his WBO Oriental super bantamweight belt against Cebuano Marvin Tampus Singwancha.
