USC dethrones USJ-R in CESAFI volleyball

CEBU, Philippines - The University of San Carlos (USC) dethroned the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) in the men's division of the CESAFI volleyball tournament yesterday at the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) gym.

The Norvie Labuga-mentored USC Warriors thrashed USJ-R of Cebu Sports Hall of Famer coach Grace Antigua in straight sets, 25-19, 25-16, 25-21.

The triumph was spearheaded by Dennis Sepulveda, Kennith Bensig, Bonvie Estrera along with Jerone Maestre, Harvey Bernil and Earvin Gallegos.

“I'm glad that my players sustained their performance. They followed my instructions and their teamwork played a significant factor in their victory. I am hoping that they will even improve until the finals,” said Labuga.

The former two-time champions will face USPF in the championship on September 21.

USPF booked the other final ticket after edging out the University of the Visayas in four sets.

USPF took the first set, 25-19, but UV bounced back in the second frame with a 26-24 thriller.

Seemingly alarmed by the setback, USPF never allowed UV to score again as they swept the last two sets, 26-24, 25-22, behind the efforts of the high-flying Edward Ybañez, Jonrey Opone, Christopher Ryan Abut and Shane Cardoza.– (FREEMAN)
