Emerging sports get a boost

CEBU, Philippines - In order not to leave any sport behind, the Cebu City Sports Commission has tasked one of its commissioners to take care of the emerging sports that the Cebuanos have a potential to excel in.

The young and dynamic CCSC commissioner Brian Lim had gladly accepted the challenge and looks forward to developing the so-called emerging sports.

The emerging sports, as CCSC defines it, are those that are non-mainstream events that have become competitive sports.

Aside from giving the athletes a chance to shine, these events are also seen as major sports tourism draws.

Emerging sports that have been identified are field sports (flag football, Ultimate Frisbee and rugby), batted sports (baseball and softball), motorsports (motocross, car racing, karting, underbone racing), airsoft, mixed martial arts, watersports (wakeboarding, skimboarding, kite surfing, jetski and wind surfing), x-games (BMX, skateboarding and roller blading) and electronic sports also known as e-sports.

There are already into e-sports in this part of the world, but with this shot in the arm, this will also be given a boost. These are the computer-based games that are a big thing in other Asian nations.

CCSC Commissioner Lim himself is also into e-sports and had been world ranked no. 49 in Warcraft.

To further promote this kind of sports here, a facility is being targeted at the South Road Properties.

An investor, Lim earlier said, has already expressed desire to put up a facility for a world class track, a field, x-games area, and airsoft and watersports zones.

Should the City finally give a nod to this, Lim believes that in a matter of only three years, Cebu City will be known not only nationally, but internationally as a destination for emerging sports. (BANATSPORTS)
