Mandaue pugs take first runner-up honors in Tinga Cup boxfest

CEBU, Philippines - The Mandaue City Boxing Team of coach Peter Cuizon seized one gold, two silvers and one bronze to emerge as first runner-up in the 2010 Mayor Tinga Cup Invitational Amateur Boxing Tournament yesterday at the Cantada Sports Complex in Taguig City.

Mark Bernaldez saved Mandaue from a gold medal blackout after he outpointed Nathaniel Montealto of Puerto Princesa, 16-12, in the 57 kgs. final under the 15 -17 age bracket.

Two of Bernaldez’s teammates also advanced into the final round but could only settle for silver after losing to their respective foes both from Puerto Princesa.

Basilio Sultan bowed to Mesaeck Alfuerto, 9-15, in the 51 kgs. class, while Michael Romarate fell prey to Ruiz Laurence Tesorio, 12-14.

Mandaue’s bronze medal, on the other hand, was handed over by 54 kgs. bet Christian Apawan.

Mandaue’s fifth boxer Reoxyl Tabogon, silver medallist in the same event last year, failed to take home a medal, but was able to win two of his assignments under the losers’ bracket. – Caecent No-ot Magsumbol   (FREEMAN NEWS)
