USJ-R belles show way in CESAFI Partner's volleyball

CEBU, Philippines - The University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) is on top of the CESAFI Partner’s Cup Women’s Volleyball Tournament after winning its first two assignments yesterday at the USC-Main Campus gym.

The Ave Maria Sanctuary Park sponsored team of Cebu Sports Hall of Famer Grace Antigua beat Virginia Premium Corned Beef-Cebu Doctors’ University 25-18, 25-13, 25-19 in the first game.

Later in the afternoon, USJ-R upended Prime Asia and Jewelry Shop-University of the Visayas 25-18, 25-10, 25-20 to compile a 2-0 record.

CESAFI women’s defending champion CDO Idol Cheese Hotdog-University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) had an easy win over Enervon C Multivitamins-University of Cebu (UC), 25-10, 25-11, 25-11 for its first victory.

Also chalking up a win was R. Lapid’s Chicharon-Southwestern University (SWU). Under new coach Joreem Yu the team trounced Enervon C Multivitamins-University of Cebu (UC) 25-14, 25-15, 25-7.

USJ-R had no problem in disposing off its rivals but got a little careless in the third set of its match versus UV.

UV battled back and was within two, 14-16 when Joy Bonita rattled off six services aces to make it 22-14 for USJ-R. She then conspired with Michelle Simbajon, Mona Dubduban, Sarah Miculob, Carla Garces and Rachelle Hannah Singson to reach match point 24-14. UV, however, came back again and scored six points before USJ-R finally put the game away.

The games continue today with USJ-R tackling SWU in the morning then takes on USPF in the afternoon. This is a rematch between the two finalists in the regular CESAFI women’s volleyball tournament. — Marigold P. Lebumfacil (THE FREEMAN)
