CEBU - As expected, the Cebuano invaders dominated the 2008 Governor Icot Petilla Invitational Road Race in Hilongos, Leyte the other day.
Local followers of cycling found the class A battle a scripted one, with the Cebu bets racing like they are just strolling around the area as Randy Carbonera won the 100-kilometer individual road race with relative ease.
Judmar Villarosa trailed Carbonera while Janno Canasa settled for the third place honors.
In the 400-meter sprint, Marjun Villarosa came out the fastest in class A. Villarosa got another second place finish, while Carbonera ended his bid at third.
A week before Christmas, the group of Carbonera also joined a mountainbike competition in Hilongos where they swept the top honors in all events they competed.
In class B still in the sprint event, Joy Navates of Inupacan, Leyte bagged the first place honors. Efren Lasquete of host Hilongos finished second followed by Cebuano Walter Matudan.
Ormoc’s Philip Sainz, on the other hand, scored a double victory after winning the executive division’s sprint and 60-kilometer road race.
Behind Sainz in the sprint were his teammate Edwin Relivo and another Hilongos bet Boyet Suarez.
In the road race, Sainz defeated Ernie Gupo of Matalom for his second title as Ormoc’s Dr.Jaime Gatchalian came out third in this Hilongos Cycling One-organized event. (THE FREEMAN)
