Duenas, Gitaruelas stamp classes in 7th Cebu Midnight Run

Cebu - Southwestern University’s John Philip Duenas and Leizsl Lumindas-Gitaruelas stamped their respective classed in the 7th Cebu Midnight Run yesterday at the Cebu Business Park.

Duenas, who ruled the inaugural UTAFA Hurdle-to-Run last week, dethroned Mendel Lopez, one of the most decorated runners as far as the midnight run is concerned, for the top post.

Lopez was enjoying a brief lead in the close to five-kilometer race course until the Danao City-native Duenas came rushing to his side and eventually overtook him in the final 100 meters.

Duenas did not look back to claim his first midnight run title to the delight of Danao City Sports Commission chairman and city councilor Oscar “Boying” Rodriguez who also joined the event.

It was a photo finish for third place, with the little-known Ian Bernido finishing ahead of Eugene Deloposo. Ramie Lawas came out fifth.

The sixth to 10th placers were Alfitchie Marganon, Robert Daang,Charlie Berberio, Jude Rivera and Leo Abello.

In the distaff side, Gitaruelas came back strong from a previous setback and scored a rousing victory over her running buddy Madelyn Carter. Jessica Hermansson got the third spot.

Completing the top 10 cast in the women’s division were Virgincita Rodriguez, Maria Anderberg, Maria Cristina Lamparas, Melinda Ponce, Jane Ong, Beverlyn Lascuna, and Brenda Portugaleza. – Caecent No-ot Magsumbol (THE FREEMAN)
