Cebu Provincial sportsfest starts in Liloan

CEBU – The Cebu Provincial Sports and Cultural Festival 2008 fire off this afternoon at Liloan Central School Grounds with no other than Gov. Gwen Garcia lighting the festival urn.

Eight of Cebu’s component cities and 45 municipalities will compete in the 6-day event in some 22 sporting disciplines.

Liloan, however, will share hosting honors with neighboring towns – Consolacion and Compostela – because it doesn’t have the resources to host all 22 events.

Other events, like the swimming competition will be contested at the Cebu City Sports Center (Abellana).

The winners in this sports festival get the chance to compete in the 2009 Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVRAA) meet in Negros. Winners in CVRAA qualify to represent Cebu in the Palarong Pambansa.

Liloan Mayor Vincent Franco “Duke” Frasco will deliver the welcome address during the opening ceremony. In an interview with The FREEMAN, he said that hosting the event will be “both a challenge and opportunity for Liloan as thousands are expected to come to town to watch the games.”

The mayor, who chairs the overall management committee, assured sports aficionados the success of the sports festival. He will have ample support from co-chairmen that include Vice-Mayor Thelma Jordan, Executive Secretary Aljew Frasco and License Inspector Hammurabi Bugtai. — Marigold P. Lebumfacil (THE FREEMAN)
