The Nuggets dwarfed the Giants, 53-45, to capture the first ever championship of the Robinson’s Supermarket Basketball Tournament at the Visayan Glass Gym in Brgy. Guadalupe, this city.
Aside from carving history in the annals of Robinson’s cage league, the Nuggets also scored a sweet redemption over the Giants, who dealt their first and only loss in the month-long tilt.
Determined to get even, the Nuggets fought with a lot of intensity on both ends of the court. They shackled the Giants with their porous defensive stance anchored on Diosdado Inigo and Finals MVP Manolit Iligan.
It was, however, the fast-breaking plays of Nuggets’ Arjie Tormis which brought the heaviest damage on the Giants. Tormis topscored for the Nuggets with 17 points.
Heading into the final quarter, the Giants enjoyed a three-point lead behind the efforts of Marcelo Nemenso, who dished out a game-high 27 points.
But the Giants failed to sustain their momentum towards the end of the match, allowing the Nuggets to turn the tide in their favor using their unstoppable run-and-gun game.
Aside from trophies, the Nuggets took home P6,000, while the Giants received P2,000.
Ms. Joan Yu, on the other hand, won the free throw shooting contest among the five female officers of Robinson’s Supermarket. She also got a picture frame from event sponsor K Gallery Frames.
The tournament was organized by Sidney Kiamko and facilitated by Jeffrey Jaen.—EBV
