Martial arts seminar

I got a call from one of Cebu’s most-respected martial arts experts, Grandmaster Ciriaco ‘Noy Cacoy’ Cañete last Tuesday morning.

Noy Cacoy called up to inform me about the martial arts seminar he was doing starting tomorrow at the City Sports Club Cebu along with three other experts from different disciplines.

He will be joined by Master Richard Bustillo, who is not only an expert in Jeet Kune Do, but is acclaimed as the sparring partner of the legendary Bruce Lee.  I met Master Richard in many eskrima competitions since the 1990s and the last time I saw him was a couple of years ago during a martial arts seminar at JY Square.

Other martial arts experts who will be sharing their skills are Grandmaster Anthony Kleeman and Vince Palumbo, who will both be tackling kickboxing.

Noy Cacoy, of course, will be lecturing on eskrido, which is a combination of stick fighting and judo, aside from pangamot.

This will be a chance for those interested to get into martial arts to see the experts show their skills.  The current practitioners and enthusiasts will also be able to enhance their knowledge.

I’ve been to a few seminars and definitely, there is always a thing or two that you can pick-up.

The last seminar that I joined with no less than Grand Master Phil Porter, a 12th dan judoka, lecturing, I learned that a very slight change in the way I would move my feet while doing  the ouchi-gari (major inner reaping throw) and the kouchi-gari (minor inner reaping throw) can make a big difference in the result.

On Saturday, Noy Cacoy said, they will also be enshrining several martial arts practitioners into the Doce Pares Hall of Fame in ceremonies that would be held at the Holiday Plaza Hotel along F. Ramos St.

The public will once again get a chance to see the martial experts on March 9, Sunday, when they do a demonstration also at the City Sports Club.

I still have to know more about the schedules, but I’ll keep you posted.

The other week, I received many calls and text messages about the elections of the Cebu Football Association (CebuFA).

At first it was a surprise to learn that the football group has scheduled an election of officers, but then I realized that I wasn’t even a CebuFA member so I wasn’t expected to know.

Anyway, being a member isn’t really what is important it is participating in the activities for the good of football in this part of the world.

It seems that things have been settled with regards to how the elections would be conducted and I wish the organization all the best and the new set of directors and officers all the luck.

What I also hope to see would be more cooperation from all sectors involved, yes including those people like me who have been left out in the cold.

If our desire is for the good of the sport, then let’s do our share of helping whoever would be sitting in the CebuFA board.

MILESTONES: I’d like to greet my very good friend, Joy Uy of Continental Air, a very happy birthday.

Belated greetings also go to our high school class president Donald Antonio and to the president of the Gray Knights Society (an organization composed of former PMA cadets) Leodovico ‘Oyel’ Bungubung, who both turned a year older yesterday.

More power to all of you!
