Henkel ‘95, GCM ‘98-B stay unbeaten in CECABA hoopfest

Henkel Philippines ’95 and GCM Royalle Merchandise ’98-B hammered contrasting wins over separate foes to keep their undefeated records intact in the Cebu Eastern College Alumni Basketball Association’s 10th Dr. Chen Lieh Fu Memorial Cup last Saturday at the CEC Gym.

Class ’95 handily pulverized Jepoy Sales Inc. 2001 into smithereens, 74-49, while Class ’98-B had to pass through the wringer before grinding through a 62-59 victory over sister-team Cokaliong Shipping ’98-A.

Leading by only two points at halftime, 31-29, Class ’95 made a 16-9 in the third period before formally knocking out the hapless Class 2001 using a deadly 27-11 punch in the windup.

Many-time All-Star Donald Anthony Ting once again topscored with 22 points as Class ’95 coasted to its third consecutive win in as many games. Dean Dy Teves and Joseph James Yu each added 12 markers, while Edison Ho fired a season-high 11 markers on a spectacular 5-of-6 sniping from the field.

Alwyn Ong was the lone double-digit scorer with 14 for Class 2001, which slipped to 1-1.

In the other match, Robinson Yap and Elvis Evangelista keyed a tide-turning rally in the windup to help Class ’98-B snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Trailing by four after three quarters, 39-43, Yap and Evangelista connived with 17 points in a 25-16 spurt to catapult Class ’98-B to a come-from-behind triumph.

It was a memorable win that Yap needs to celebrate. He established a league-record of 12 blocks in a single game aside from finishing with 21 points, six rebounds, three steals and an assist in an awesome display of hardcourt versatility.

Evangelista chipped in 16 points, nine rebounds and three steals as Class ’98-B nailed its second straight victory in as many starts.

Erick Andrew So had 19 points, four rebounds and two steals for Class ’98-A. Rex Millan added 18 markers and eight rebounds followed by Paul Timothy So with 16 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists but their efforts went for naught as they fell to 1-2.
