Niño, Em-Em win golds in Penang

The Penang leg of the Malaysian Junior Tennis circuit might be a thorn for most Cebuano netters, but not for Niño and Sally Mae Siso.

The top Cebuano junior netters bagged both the boys’ and girls’ 14-under singles and doubles titles yesterday at the Universiti Sains Malaysia courts.

Interestingly, both Niño and Sally Mae Siso defeated their doubles partners for the singles title.

Niño overpowered Pearjit Singh 6-1, 6-4 to win the singles title while younger sister Sally Mae beat Theiviya Selvarajoo 6-0, 6-2.

After winning the singles, the Siso siblings teamed up with their rivals to rule the doubles events.

Niño blended well with Singh to outwit Hoo Seng Cheh and Kenneth Tanweir Shen 6-4, 6-3. On the other hand, Sally Mae and Theiviya had a solid game and prevailed over Yeoh Sue Lynn Karin and Tia Jia Min 6-0, 6-1.

With their victories, Niño and Sally Mae of the University of San Carlos South Campus, felt they have thanked their sponsors including Primary Structures Corporation, Commonwealth Estate Incorporated, Guardo Group of Companies led by Jonathan Guardo, Tavo’s Sports and Dunlop.

Earlier, Vince Marc Tabotabo, who is supported by vice-governor Greg Sanchez, brought home gold and silver from the boys’ 10-under division.

The other Cebuano junior netters Krissianne Kintanar and Jacob Lagman ended up with three medals among them. Kintanar won two silvers in the girls’ 10-under division while Lagman snatched the bronze in the boys’ 12-under category.

Of the five Cebuanos competing in Malaysia, only the Siso siblings and Kintanar will complete the circuit as Lagman and Tabotabo have already left for home.

After Penang, the three Cebuanos will proceed to Perlis for the third leg. —Caecent No-ot Magsumbol
