The Oriental Port and Allied Services Corporation (OPASCOR) beats Pepsi Cola Plant 42-18 in chess to win the Goodwill Games title at their turf.
The teams played over 10 boards in a two-round match. A team earns two points for a win and half a point for a draw.
OPASCOR president Atty. Tom Rivera led his team to a 28-12 victory over Pepsi in the first round by outwitting Pepsi Cola’s captain, Prix Fernandez in board 1.
Florimae Velasco, the only female player, showed she is at par with her male counterparts by beating Pepsi’s Wilfredo Loga in board 3.
Other OPASCOR players that chalked up points were Mark Alasagas in board 5, Marwin Eguias in board 6 and Albert Mula in board 9.
Pepsi Cola tried to play catch up in the second round but OPASCOR chessers stood their ground.
Rivera once again carried his team to victory by repeating over Fernandez while Velasco also prevailed over Loga as OPASCOR scored a 14-6 victory in the second round.
