Sevilleno grabs title in Mantawi footrace

Cebu's road running queen Christy Sevilleno confidently took her third championship title in a row even as protests marred the staging of the 1st Mandaue City 10-K Run at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex yesterday.

University of Cebu's Sevilleno was up by around a hundred meter against arch-rival Leiszl Lumindas-Getaruelas to claim her third title this year, her second in the 10-k distance.

The young Joeyry Ann Lee, on the other hand, survived a close battle and got the third place against former top female runner, Merlita Arias.

Rounding up the top 10 cast in the women's division were Gina Adan, Marites Jumamoy, Madelyn Carter, Pearl Beronia, Grace Bascon and Jennifer Montejo.

In the men's side, the technical committee declared University of Southern Philippines-Foundation's Riez Enriquez as the "rightful" men's open champion over teammate Mendel Lopez.

Lopez crossed the finish line first and was posted as the top runner, but was caught by surprise when told that he had been replaced by Enriquez.

Enriquez did not mind him being a teammate of Lopez and complained saying he was elbowed by Lopez at the gate, just a few minutes away from the finish line.

Lopez told The Freeman, all he did was to get away from Enriquez, who was allegedly instructed by an escort to block his way to the finish line.

"Unsaon pa man nako pag-control sa akong kusog nga paliko man ang finish, nya sige mag siyag gisulsulan nga abungan ko, maong nikawala ko, napaod ming duha sa gate," Lopez explained.

Veteran running enthusiasts commented that the finish line should have been placed before the entrance of the sports complex and not on a curve.

Adonis Singson came out third while Eugene Delposo got the fourth spot, relegating Joseph Penales on fifth place.

Penales was earlier not in the list of the top 10 finishers.

The sixth to 10th placers in the men's side were Meljun Luterte, John Philip Duenas, Gilbert Luterte, Xanderlyn Loloy and Gabrial Zabate.

In another protest-marred division, foreign entry Francis Cosgrave got the top post after several complaint about the qualification of MaxJun Espinosa in the master A.

Espinosa was dropped to second and Rusty Vergara on third replacing another runner who was named the third placer earlier.

Nogie Biagan and Joel Juarez also were in the same situation as Cosgrave before taking away a 1-2 finish in the executive A title as Rey Dugue remained third.

The executive B had Celestino Guiao on top, but the second and third place finishers eventually went to Leong Palco and Jojo Nunez after they fielded a complain.

Even the Timex Runner's division was not spared by trouble and later identified Hedilito Ngujo as the top runner in their class with Teodoro Alimpangog and Edmund Paras claiming the second and third places, respectively.

Perhaps, only the master's B and the master-women's division had not been problematic with Buenvenido Dignos winning the master's B and Camila Luterte in the distaff side.

No official time was released, leaving runners displeased hoping the next running event in the city would be better.
