Carbonera stuns Surban in Mayor Arquillano bikefest

- Caecent No-ot Magsumbol -
Randy Carbonera stunned national team member Niño Surban to grab the elite title in the 1st Mayor Al Arquillano Mountainbike Challenge in San Francisco, Camotes the other day.

After a neck-to-neck action ensued, Carbonera, fondly called as "Negro" in the cycling community, made his move in the winding road, midway in the 48-kilometer race route.

Carbonera then never looked back as he managed to increase his lead en route to breasting the tape in one hour, 28 minutes and 28.1 seconds.

Donning the Quickflight Racing jersey in his comeback bid after the 26th SEA Games, Surban clocked 1:31:23.99 to place second.

On the other hand, the contest for the next three places proved to be one tough and exciting battle as all three cyclists had to summon all their strength to get the honors due to them.

Eventually, Norman Navarro grabbed the third place in 1:37:14.13, Jojo Cortes settled fourth in 1:37:14.43 and another Quickflight rider Albert Basirgo at fifth place in 1:37:14.53.

On the other hand, Evic Largo, who also had a brief stint with the RP squad, is back in the good form after topping the seniors division and he was trailed by Adonis Bohol as Joseph Diez came out third. Earl Vince Cadampog was fourth and Jerome Beljida was fifth place.

Also, Dr. Jonathan Simbajon extended his dominance in mountainbike after ruling the executive class as the second to fifth places were occupied by Jun Taneo, YKK's Rudy Cordero, Jezryl Ramoneda and one of the organizers Jun Amores.

Mayor Al Arquillano, whom the event is named after, and UCI Commissaire and Danao City councilor Oscar "Boying" Rodriguez, Jr. also added up spice in the executive race.

In the veteran's class, another Quickflight rider, Felomino Asignar grabbed the top post, beating Danao's Christopher Marzon while Bernard Mabini came out third, Asignar's teammate Badok Lopez was fourth and Noel Famor was fifth.

Bikehub's Ben Fabroa got the first place trophy in the master's division after outsmarting Ronald Navarro as Haylin Bardaje ended third.

Marjun Villarosa dominated the junior division over Janno Canasa as Richard Navarro wound up third.

In the beginner's class, it was Wesley Abastillas who won the first place while Michael Tanchado was second and Jun-jun Canasa placed third.
