UV splits assignments in CESAFI volleyball

The University of the Visayas splits its assignment yesterday as the men's team posted its second victory, beating the University of San Carlos while the women's squad fell prey to University of San Jose-Recoletos in yesterday's Cebu Schools Athletics Foundation, Inc. volleyball tournament at Aznar Coliseum.

The men's team, who lost to USJ-R the other day, went through a wringer before dumping USC Warriors to win is second assignment.

UV had a strong start, taking the first two set, 25-19, 25-21, but it fizzled out in the next set as the gritty USC Warriors fired back by taking the last three points, 15-25, to stay in contention.

Determined not squander any chances, UV summoned all its wits to grab the game, 25-20.

On the other hand, the Lady Lancers had a bad start, absorbing its first loss in the hands of the University of San Jose-Recoletos, 14-25, 15-25, 20-25.

Also in the distaff side, three-time champion Southwestern University prevailed over University of Cebu, but not after suffering scare.

SWU, under coach Thelma Datig, was banking on its only veteran player Jurine Sanchez, in winning the first two frames, 25-22, 25-10.

The third set proved to be the toughest fight in the match, extending the scores to 27-29 in favor of USC, before SWU wrapped up the game, 25-12.

University of Southern Philippines Foundation crafted a come-from-behind victory over USC, 22-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-17.
