Queen City United vies in National Women's football

The Cebu Football Association is pinning high hopes on the Queen City United which will represent Cebu to the 2005 Philippine Football Federation National Women's Championship on August 16-23 in Davao City.

CebuFA president Jonathan "Maxi" Maximo said they have decided to make QCU as its core team on the basis of its past performance in the Aboitiz Cup last year and the 1st Cebu Amateur Football Cup National Invitational tournament last summer.

In the absence of the NCR squad, which is composed mostly of national players, Cebu has a bigger chance of winning.

"We are hopeful they will have a better performance this time with no NCR team since majority of its players are busy preparing for the SEAG and they can not complete a squad for the tournament," said Maximo.

Cebu belongs in bracket A along with Ilo-ilo, Rizal and Iligan while teams in group B are defending champion Davao, Zamboanga, Cagayan and South Cotabato.

"We are looking at topping the bracket and hurdle Ilo-ilo and in the cross over avoid Davao to get through semifinals,"said Maximo.

The team members who are under coach Richard Montayre are Iris Meca, Remyllyne Sheryll Melgar, Lady Maripette Ocampo, Janice Ann Dalisay, Cristina Fuentes, Medalyn Cena, Ma. Eleanor Rabaya, Kathrina Marie Bejec, Kristine Oplado, Ivy Jane Bungcasan, Julieta Rosos, Valerie Rafanan, Jan Vircille Salac, Marlou Solon, Elaine Jane Macasero, Rhodora Toledo and Carmel Codina. - Sona Mae V.
