Cebu to host 7th Asian Beach Games
CEBU, Philippines — The Olympic Council of Asia’s flag now flies for the Philippines, after POC President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino formally accepted the handover Thursday night, sealing Cebu City’s role as host of the 7th Asian Beach Games (ABG) in March 2028.
The ceremony at Yasha Park Ring Theater capped the 6th ABG, where Team Philippines delivered its strongest showing yet: three golds, four silvers, and two bronzes, finishing fifth overall. Jiu-jitsu aces Annie Ramirez and Alexandria Luz Enriquez, alongside high jumper Leonard Grospe, clinched the golds, while Gilas Pilipinas women and sprinter Jessica Rose Laurance added to the medal tally.
“We beat our previous record in Da Nang. This proves we’re ready for 2028,” Tolentino said.
The host city contract, signed by Tolentino and OCA President Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, confirmed Cebu’s historic hosting --the first time the Philippines will stage the ABG.
PSC Chairman Patrick “Pato” Gregorio said earlier that Cebu did not undergo a bidding process, with Governor Pamela Baricuatro and Mayor Nestor Archival pledging readiness.
PSC Commissioner Edward Hayco emphasized Cebu’s cultural identity, as Dancesport Team Cebu City performed in the closing ceremonies to symbolize the island’s blend of sport and heritage.
Organizers said 24 sports disciplines will be featured, ranging from martial arts to water sports, with scheduling carefully set to avoid Ramadan and Holy Week.
POC Secretary General Wharton Chan described Cebu 2028 as a “practice run” for a possible future Asian Games bid.
From hosting international dancesport events, and WEKAF world championships to staging Ironman triathlons, Cebu has long been a sports hub.
The ABG now represents its most ambitious leap, testing infrastructure and organizational capacity while showcasing the island’s beaches and Filipino athletic talent.
As Tolentino declared in Sanya: “If it was ‘See ya in Sanya,’ now it’s ‘See you in Cebu.’” (FREEMAN)
