Women cops honored
CEBU, Philippines — In line with the celebration of National Women’s Month, the Cebu Police Provincial Office (CPPO) and the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) honored women in the police force through kickoff and awarding ceremonies on Monday, March 9, a day after the country observed International Women's Day.
Carrying the theme “Lead like the Babaylans, Filipinas!,” the provincial and city police offices recognized the leadership and dedication of female police officers in public service.
During the CPPO ceremony, Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro served as guest of honor and acknowledged both the challenges and strengths women encounter, particularly in leadership roles.
“I personally understand the challenges women face when stepping into leadership roles. But I also know the strength, compassion, and determination that women bring to public service,” Baricuatro said in her message.
She highlighted the important role of women police officers as role models, inspiring the next generation by demonstrating that women can lead, protect, and serve with courage.
“Your work proves that women are not limited by stereotypes. Women can wear the badge, enforce the law, lead units, and stand on the frontlines of peace and order,” she added.
Baricuatro also reaffirmed her commitment to supporting programs and initiatives that empower women, protect their rights, and create opportunities for them to grow and lead.
“To all our women in uniform and women leaders across Cebu—we see you, we thank you, and we are proud of you,” she said.
Baricuatro, together with CPPO Provincial Director Abubakar Mangelen Jr., led the recognition of several police personnel for their exemplary service.
Among those honored were PSMS Girlee Echaluche, PMSG Daphne Menchavez, PSSg Shiela Bacus, PCpl Lovelyn Rose Tapales, Patrolwoman Teojenesa Embrainag, and Patrolwoman Jaycyl Batingal for their outstanding performance and commitment to duty.
Also recognized for supporting women’s leadership and strengthening police-community partnerships were Atty. Ria Lidia Espina of the Provincial Advisory Group for Police Transformation and Development; Atty. Jean Raiza Yano, supervisor of the Provincial Internal Affairs and Services; and Joecelle Dela Cruz and Zenaida Aya-ay, president and treasurer of the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team, respectively.
As part of the program, women police officers from the 1st and 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Companies showcased their discipline and operational readiness through a Close Quarter Battle demonstration.
Meanwhile, at the CCPO celebration, Lecel Llamedo, assistant regional director of the National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) in Central Visayas, served as guest of honor and speaker.
In her message, Llamedo likened female police officers to modern-day Babaylans, emphasizing the importance of women empowerment and recognizing their vital contributions to public service.
“You are the modern Babaylans standing at checkpoints, leading investigations, guiding teams, comforting victims, and upholding the law with dignity and resolve,” she said.
The CCPO celebration also featured a Zumba activity participated in by policewomen and staff.
Members of the LGBTQ+ community within the city police were likewise highlighted through a mini-pageant that showcased their talent, wit, and creativity, underscoring the police force’s commitment to inclusivity. — (FREEMAN)
