Calamity victims get financial relief

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Survivors of Typhoon Tino in Cebu City, along with the victims of the Cogon Pardo fire, received financial assistance from humanitarian and government institutions as part of their commitment to stand by their communities in times of crisis.

On the eve of Valentine's Day, some 567 families gathered at the Barangay Bonbon covered court to claim ?8,000 each from the Philippine Red Cross under its Multipurpose Cash Grant Program.

The initiative, carried out in partnership with the Cebu City Government and the City Social Welfare and Development Office, was led by Red Cross officials, including International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) Regional Director for Asia Pacific Alexander Matheou, IFRC Head of Delegation to the Philippines Sanjeev Kafley, and PRC Secretary General Dr. Gwendolyn Pang.

The Red Cross emphasized that the cash grants were designed to give families flexibility in addressing their most urgent needs, whether for food, medicines, or shelter repairs.

City officials expressed gratitude for the support, highlighting the importance of partnerships in disaster recovery and resilience building.

Typhoon Tino struck Cebu and other parts of the country in early November 2025, bringing torrential rains and fierce winds that devastated parts of the Visayas.

Tino left hundreds dead and caused widespread damage across the region, compounding the province’s recovery challenges following the September 2025 earthquake.

A few days earlier, the Cebu City Government extended aid to victims of the December 9, 2025, fire in Sitio All Season 3, Barangay Cogon Pardo.

The blaze destroyed 74 houses and displaced more than 300 residents, with damages estimated at ?3.75 million.

Mayor Nestor Archival and Department of Social Welfare and Services (DSWS) Head Portia Basmayor led the distribution of financial assistance to nearly a hundred affected individuals.

Homeowners received ?20,000 each; sharers and renters were given ?10,000, while lodgers and single bed spacers were provided with ?5,000 each. (CEBU NEWS)
