Lapu-Lapu City to form task force vs mpox cases
CEBU, Philippines — Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan is set to form a dedicated task force to address any potential cases of Monkeypox (Mpox) that may emerge in the city.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Chan announced that he will soon sign an executive order (EO) to officially establish the task force.
The task force will include representatives from key agencies such as the Office of the City Mayor, City Health Office, City District Hospital, City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, Lapu-Lapu City Police Office, and other relevant departments.
Chan will serve as the chairman of the task force. He stressed that barangay health workers will be crucial in monitoring potential cases at the grassroots level.
He said the creation of the task force aims to ensure that the public is properly informed and guided should symptoms of Mpox arise—helping to avoid unnecessary panic.
Chan noted that the city had previously formed an inter-agency task force during the COVID-19 pandemic, which he described as successful because of strong cooperation among agencies.
“Remember, nakasuway na ta during the time of COVID-19 pandemic nga mas grabe to siya pero nabuntog nato si COVID tungod sa atong hiniusang pagtinabangay,” said Chan.
With the task force in place, Chan emphasized that potential Mpox cases can be addressed promptly and effectively.
He assured the public that the city government will provide free medication, food, and essential care to patients placed in isolation.
The mayor also urged residents not to panic and encouraged Oponganons to continue observing proper health protocols.
To support the initiative, the city government has established a dedicated Mpox hotline. Residents who experience symptoms or unusual health conditions can call 340-8626 or 0955 653 4096 for assistance.
“Kini ang atoang task force which engkaso dunay mga simtomas nga kining Mpox– naay rashes, fever, muscle or body pain, advice nako isolate and they will call the hotline,” Chan said.
He added that the task force will promptly visit homes of suspected cases for testing, and if confirmed positive, the city will ensure patients receive the necessary medicine and food to recover while in isolation. FPL CEBU NEWS
