4 generator sets installed on Malapascua Island

CEBU, Philippines — The four generator sets rented by the Cebu provincial government from a private company have been installed on Malapascua Island in the northern town of Daanbantayan to address the power crisis sweeping the island for months now.

Governor Gwendolyn Garcia visited the island yesterday and inspected the installment of the four generator sets. Each set has a capacity of 500 KVA totaling two megawatts.

During a short program, Garcia told residents of the island that the Capitol decided to intervene in the power crisis, invoking Section 16 of the Local Government Code which empowers the local government unit “to come in when the general welfare of the people is already at stake”

“It has affected your business, your livelihoods, the tourism industry. We cannot allow that to happen” Garcia told the residents of Malapascua island.

Resort owners, business operators, and residents on the island have been raising concerns about power outages experienced since Holy Week.

It was found out that the power service interruption was caused by one of the four generator sets of Power Source Philippines Inc, (PSPI) that is not working and needs repair.

Malapascua Island is one of the prime tourism destinations in Cebu Province as a leading dive destination. The island also offers white sand beaches. (CEBU NEWS)
