According to Police Major Mark Don Alfred Leanza, chief of Abellana Police Station 2 of the Cebu City Police Office, Peñaflor left his house to withdraw money when he saw Sequito and some friends drinking near their boarding house.

Peñaflor approached the group and one of them insisted that he drink with them so in respect, the victim drank two glasses of beer. After which, he decided to leave to withdraw money.

But Peñaflor reportedly did not notice that Sequito followed him and when he arrived near Uytengsu Street, the latter reportedly punched him, hitting the back of his left ear. Sequito then pointed his service firearm at Peñaflor but did not fire.
