Fires hit Toledo City, Oslob

Rowena D. Capistrano - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Fifteen homes were destroyed in a fire that broke out in Barangay Luray 1, Toledo City, yesterday afternoon.

The fire started in an interior portion of the barangay, prompting the Toledo City Fire Station to raise the fire to the second alarm due to the narrow roads.

The firefighters and fire trucks that responded to this alarm included the ones already responding to a grass fire in Barangay Canlumampao in the same city.

The fire was declared fire-out at 2:30 p.m., although the fire department is still investigating the cause. The damage from the fire is estimated to reach ?1.8 million.

Meanwhile in Oslob town, up to 70 hectares were affected by an extensive grass fire.

According to the Oslob Fire Station, the fire started early in the afternoon last Saturday but it was reported to the fire department only 8 p.m. later that day.

It was difficult for firefighters to control the fire because of the strong winds, but it was brought under control around 2 p.m. yesterday.

The grass fire started in Upper Calumpang and reached the mountains of Barangays Poblacion, Cañang, and Daanglungsod.

Besides the heat of the weather, the fire department is still investigating what caused the fire, according to SFO1 Pitz John Romeo, fire investigator of the Oslob Municipal Fire Station.

No one was reported injured in the fire.

The fire department has warned the public not to burn garbage, dry plants, or leaves to avoid possible fires..(CEBU NEWS)
