CEBU, Philippines —  The Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD), in partnership with Cebu provincial government, has launched a housing project for active and retired government employees.

DHSUD secretary Eduardo Del Rosario and Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia led the groundbreaking ceremony last Friday, July 30, for the construction of the Tunghaan Subdivision Project in Barangay Tunghaan, Minglanilla town, which is expected to benefit a total of 902 active civil servants and retirees.

“As you can see, we had the groundbreaking done just after over a month since the MOA (memorandum of agreement) was sealed. We want these housing projects that benefit our hardworking government employees, as well as retirees, to enjoy the comforts of having their own house after having served the government all their life,” Del Rosario said.

The project was also supported by the Home Development Mutual Fund or Pag-IBIG Fund, one of DHSUD’s key shelter agencies.

Last week, the DHSUD also awarded 450 housing units to the residents affected by super typhoon Yolanda in Barangay Kabac in the remote island of Bantayan, Cebu.

Beneficiaries consisted of 175 families from Kabac, 199 from Patao, 55 from Baod and 21 from Guiwanon.

The first phase of the housing project involved 450 units, which were already turned over last November 2019. The third phase, which will have 350 units, will soon rise.

A total of 6,421 housing units meant for the victims of super typhoon Yolanda have already been turned over across Central Visayas.

Del Rosario said the DHSUD intends to have similar housing agreements with several local government units in the coming months.

Meanwhile, a groundbreaking ceremony was also held last Thursday for the construction of a mini market and a covered court also in Barangay Kabac. — Philippine Star News Service, JMD (FREEMAN)
