Coast Guard ‘hero’ lauded

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Presidential Assistant for the Visayas Michael Dino has commended Seaman First Class (SN1) Ralph Barajan for his bravery and dedication to public service when he saved his fellow passengers and crew members of a vessel, which capsized off Sibonga town last week.

Dino said Barajan proved that living heroes exist still in modern times. The president’s alter ego in the Visayas said that Barajan exemplified what a true public servant should have—concern to his fellowmen.

Barajan, a member of the Philippine Coast Guard, was on board MV Siargao Princess from the port of Loon in Bohol bound for Sibonga, Cebu when the fastcraft capsized mid-sea after being battered by huge waves.

Despite being off-duty, Barajan assisted in rescuing his fellow passengers and called for assistance from the PCG headquarters. His being able to maintain his composure and presence of mind during the emergency evacuation saved 63 lives, including his own.

"To the brave man who helped save the passengers of the MV Siargao Princess, Seaman First Class (SN1) Ralph Barajan, Daghang Salamat!," said Dino.

Dino said he looks forward to personally meeting Barajan in person to extend his gratitude to him.

"I am looking forward to meet you to personally congratulate and thank you for your dedicated service," Dino said.

According to   Dino, Barajan is simply a role model to all the uniformed men that even during rest days "our service remains and that we will always be available for the people who need our help."

Dino likewise commended the Coast Guard District Central Visayas for their quick response and in making sure that all will be saved.

"As always, your agency has shown us that government agencies can be as efficient and effective as yours. Continue your best practices and congratulations for a job well done," Dino further said. (FREEMAN)
