CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu Provincial Board has urged all electric cooperatives in the province to consider the use of renewable energy as an alternative source of power.

In a resolution sponsored by Provincial Board Member Thadeo Jovito “Jonkie” Ouano, the body cited the Republic Act 9513 or the Renewable Energy Act of 2008 that encourages exploring the use of renewable energy such as biomass, solar, wind, hydro, geothermal and ocean energy.

“Renewable energy is an essential part of country’s low emissions development strategy and is vital to addressing the challenge of climate change, energy security and access to energy,” the resolution reads.

He also cited the Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001 that promotes the use of indigenous and new renewable energy resources to reduce the dependence of imported energy.

Ouano said, these laws encourage the use of renewable energy as an effective instrument in avoiding the danger of emissions and making balance in achieving economic growth as well as protect health and environment.

“Through the adoption of sustainable energy development strategies to reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuels and thereby minimize the country’s exposure to price fluctuations in the international markets, the effects of which spiral down to almost all sectors of the economy,” Ouano said.
