Non-Catholics: Cebuanos have strong belief in Holy Child

CEBU, Philippines - While they may be of different faith, those of other religions and denominations agree that faith in the Holy Child is strong in Cebu and worth their respect.

Mimi Azman, a 25-year-old Muslim from Marawi City and a Sinulog stall vendor, said even though the Sinulog is not part of their religion, they respect the faith of the Catholic devotees, having come from a place where there are also many devotees of the Child Jesus.

Besides, she said, their holy book, the Koran, teaches that they should not question the practices and teachings of other religion.

“Hindi naman sa sinusoportaan namin kasi di rin naman pwede sa amin kasi Muslim kami, pero nakikihalobilo naman kami. Isa pa, nanininda rin naman kami,” said Azman.

She said religion is important as it serves as a guide in our life’s journey, and it is more important to just do good deeds instead of questioning the practices of other religion.

She said it was her first time in Cebu, although she has seen the Sinulog in television.

Azman said she observed the Sinulog to be a lively and joyful celebration and that she observed that devotees of the Sto. Niño are really willing to sacrifice for their faith.

“Nakikita ko na parang devoted talaga sila na willing sila makipagsiksikan sa daming tao para makapagsimba. At kapag Sunday, yung ibang establishments nagko-close talaga para makapagsimba sila,” she said.

Born Again Christian Alexis Angeles, 23, on the other hand, said she observed that there are more Catholic people going to church during Sinulog days compared to normal days.

She personally observed this up close, as she has many Catholic relatives and friends.

While religion is always a dividing factor for many, even within the family, she said respect is the key to have a harmonious relationship with everyone.

“We may have different beliefs in life, we may have different practices, but we still believe in one God, after all,” Angeles said.

And, she said, it would be best if everyone, despite difference in religion, serves as a good example for all.

“Simba ta kay atong gusto ug atong responsibilidad sa atong Ginoo. Simba nga kinasingkasing, dili kay napugos ta o kana lang adlaw nga Pasko, Sinulog or birthday or any other occasion,” she said.  (FREEMAN)
