More dengue cases in CV this year, so far

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Philippine Star

CEBU, Philippines - More cases of dengue were recorded in Central Visayas from January to October 3 this year compared to the same period last year.

Data released by the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit of the Department of Health -7  showed 5,929 cases and 31 deaths in 2015. These figures are 39 percent higher than the 4,267 cases and 28 deaths in the same period in 2014.

Rennan Cimafranca, regional epidemiologist, said yesterday the two recent deaths in Badian and Balamban towns are not included in the statistics just yet.

Cebu City, which has 844 cases, still tops the 20 cities in Central Visayas with the most number of dengue cases.

RESU-7 called on local governments anew to mobilize their residents to participate actively in cleaning activities.

The agency also recommended that schools put emphasis on school-based programs that teach children the ways of avoiding dengue both in school and their homes. RESU said it will benefit the community if schools create and sustain anti-dengue brigades.

The general public, meanwhile, is encouraged to keep their surroundings clean and eliminate areas where mosquitoes can breed. — (FREEMAN)
