Robredo to women: Don’t be victims of violence

Ma. Fatima R. Secuya - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - “Violence experienced by women is a cycle of violence.”

This was the message during yesterday’s 15th Women’s Congress organized by Provincial Women’s Commission (PWC) at the Cebu Provincial Capitol.

Camarines Sur Representative Leni Robredo, wife of the late Department of Interior and Local Government secretary Jesse Robredo, condemned violence against women.

“Kahit naiintindihan niya (battered wife) na naabuso siya, kahit naiintindihan niya na nabibiktima siya ng karahasan, bumabalik at bumabalik pa rin siya because hindi siya economically empowered, because financially dependent siya sa asawa niya at hindi niya maiwan ang mga anak niya,” said Robredo.

Robredo shared that in her district in Camarines Sur, they empower the women by providing them with livelihood trainings and programs.

“Hindi pwedeng training lamang. Kailangan magamit nila ito,” said Robredo.

She said if women are more financially independent and are more economically empowered, chances are they will be stronger in fighting against abuse.

However, she pointed out the importance of gender equality in society.

“Our society will be in much better position with men and women working together. May we all collaborate together so we can better support each other,” said Robredo.

Vice Governor Agnes Magpale, chairperson of PWC, presented during the congress the accomplishments of the commission, including the construction of a Women’s Crisis Center.

She was grateful to Governor Hilario Davide III, who initially appropriated P10 million for the construction of the building that started last March 1.

“We are also expecting another P10 million from the national government probably from the DSWD to finish the building that can house our women and children in need,” said Magpale, who was commended by Davide for her accomplishments as PWC head.

The event was participated by LGU officials and women from all over the province, including some delegates from Cebu City. —/ATO  (FREEMAN)
