Davide says P2.50 fare hike too high

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu Governor Hilario Davide III has appealed to the Land Franchising and Regulatory Board-7 that if it has to approve a new fare hike, it should be at a “compromised figure.”

Today, the LTFRB will hear the petition of Cebu Integrated Transport Service Cooperation which is asking to raise the minimum PUJ fare in the whole region from P7.50 to P10.

“Tingali ang P2.50 is a bit high for our commuters. Naa lang unta’y compromised figure sa fare para di pud kaayo sakit sa bulsa sa mga commuters,” said the governor, adding that there are many commuters who cannot even afford the minimum fare, how much more if an additional P2.50 for every ride is imposed.

â€œThese are hard times. We also have to consider the plight of commuters. They have to shell out additional P2.50,” he said.

Davide said though that he understands the situation of the PUJ drivers, who suffer on the unstable fuel price issue.

â€œWe also have to consider sab ang sitwasyon sa mga jeepney drivers, nagkamahal pud ang gasoline. As far sa prices of the gasoline is concerned, wa tay control ana, agad ra ta sa World Market,” Davide said.

â€œThere has to be a balance. I hope they can meet halfway,” he added.  (FREEMAN)
