Corro unmoved by impending petition

CEBU, Philippines - Daanbantayan town Mayor Augusto Corro described those behind the plan to launch a recall petition against him as “politically-threatened.”

“For myself now, wa koy panahon ana. I’m too busy with other things. I just let it flow. Ani na nako gitan-aw: they are just politically threatened in how I’m handling the town,” said Corro when interviewed by reporters at the Capitol last Friday.

Corro said apart from politics, he does not see the point of criticizing him when national government agencies and non-government organizations have reportedly commended him for how his administration managed the post-Yolanda relief operations.

Daanbantayan is among those 15 towns in northern Cebu which were badly-ravaged by the super typhoon last November.

Last month, Association of Barangay Councils president Rex Novabos confirmed rumors that they were planning to launch a recall petition against their mayor for alleged oppression, abuse of authority and irregularity in the performance of their functions and duties as mayor especially at the height of the relief operations.

Novabos said there reportedly were residents in their town who were not able to receive the aid sent by government agencies and other private donors.

But to this Corro said the plan, if it ever materializes, is “very unfair to the people of Daanbantayan” as it would result to a shaky government.

He said he will “distance myself from these things” as what his opponents are trying to do is “very unproductive” in his governance.   (FREEMAN)
