Visayas Grid hits red alert anew

CEBU, Philippines — After several days of normal operations, the Visayas Grid was once again placed under red and yellow alerts on Tuesday, October 20, due to insufficient power supply and reduced operating margins.
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) declared a red alert from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. and yellow alerts from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
As of 9 a.m. yesterday, available capacity stood at 2,468 megawatts (MW), against a peak demand of 2,545 MW.
NGCP said 685 MW of capacity was unavailable to the grid, with five power plants on forced outage this October. Another 22 power plants were operating at derated capacities.
The agency attributed the alerts mainly to the unavailability of two major coal plants in the Visayas, PEDC 3 and KSPC 1, as well as limited power imports from Mindanao due to planned outages of GNPK 4, TSI 2, TMI Mobile2-U2 and Pulangi 4-U2.
A red alert is declared when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.
A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement. — (FREEMAN)
