CEBU, Philippines - The FREEMAN editorial cartoonist and lay-out artist Ramesh Rosillo won first place in the logo design contest of the forthcoming 450th Anniversary of Kaplag.

The Kaplag Festival, celebrated in April, is an annual festivity honoring and remembering the historic and providential finding of the icon of the Sto. Niño.

The 450th anniversary of the festival, to be celebrated in 2015, commemorates two other historic events - the 450 years of the presence of Augustinians in the Philippines and the 50th year of the Sto. Niño Church as a Basilica Minore.

Rosillo bested 153 other entries from all over the country with his entry, which features a cross, folded four-and-a-half times symbolizing the number of centuries of Christianity in the Philippines, and a sun with 50 rays representing the years of existence of the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño.

Participants of the competition were required to design a logo for the upcoming 450th anniversary of the Kaplag dubbed "Santo Niño and the Dawn of Christian Faith in the Philippines" with the theme "Santo Niño, Hope of the People."

Penelope Buzon from Talisay City bagged the second place while Marie Caraballo and Mel Villaruel of Makati City won third place.

The winners will receive cash prizes of 30,000; P20,000; and P10, 000, respectively during the official awarding ceremonies on January 19, 2014, in time for the Sinulog celebration. — (FREEMAN)
