Swiss runs over, kills elderly

CEBU, Philippines - An elderly woman died Sunday afternoon after she was hit by a Honda van along the highway in Barangay Pasol, Alcoy.

Claudia Romanos, 87, was standing along the road in front of her house when she was hit by a van bearing plate number KFD 992 driven by Swiss national Heinz Rohr, 66, of Barangay Bonbon, Oslob.

Romanos sustained severe injuries in different parts of her body. She was taken to Julio Cardinal Rosales Memorial Hospital in Dalaguete town for medication but she was declared dead by the attending physician.

PO1 Bernon Gellica, desk officer of Alcoy Police Station, said that Rohr was reportedly under the influence of liquor.

Rohr was bound for Carcar City from Oslob, southern Cebu, when the incident happened.

Gellica said that Rohr tried to overtake another vehicle he was tailing when he hit Romanos.

Rohr voluntarily surrendered to Alcoy Police Station after the incident and was detained pending filing of appropriate charges at the fiscal’s office. (FREEMAN)
