Guard who shot snatcher gets cash, commendation
CEBU, Philippines - The security guard who shot a snatcher in front of the establishment he was guarding last month was awarded by Cebu City government yesterday.
Security Guard Andy Pacana Carnay, 28, who has been working as a guard for seven years now, received a certificate of recognition and P10,000 cash at the Office of the City Mayor.
Carnay said he will use the money for his family, especially as he is starting one with his live-in partner.
“Naa na unta ko’y anak pero nakuha man. Gamiton nako ang kwarta para sa akong pamilya,†he said.
Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama personally handed Carnay his reward and certificate. With the mayor during the occasion were Cebu City Police Office chief Mariano Natu-el and Police Coordinating and Advisory Council presiding officer Eugene Elizalde.
Carnay said he is grateful for this recognition.
“Nalipay ko nga nakita ni Mayor Michael Rama ang akong gibuhat,†the security guard told reporters.
When asked if he regretted hurting the alleged snatcher, he said he was just doing his job.
“Wa ko nagmahay sa akong gibuhat. Kay ako ra mang giprotektahan ang among customer,†Carnay added.
In fact, he even encouraged other security guards to do the same thing when faced with a similar situation.
“Sa atong trabaho, kinahanglan gyud ta magpakabana. Kita baya ang magbantay sa mga tawo labi na sa establishment nga atong gialagaran,†the security guard continued.
Carnay shot 24-year-old Julito Cabigon, an alleged notorious snatcher in the area that he was guarding.
Last March 13, Carnay witnessed Cabigon and three others snatch a frequent female customer’s earrings in Bea Star Fashion House along Magallanes St.
Carnay shot and hit Cabigon while his three other companions fled. Carnay tried to chase them to no avail. —/BRP (FREEMAN)
