PB regulates the flying of kites

CEBU, Philippines - The Provincial Board has passed a resolution to regulate kite-flying in the province.  This as the pastime poses danger when done near electrical posts and wires, said acting Vice Governor Julian Daan.

Daan sponsored the resolution “urging Local Government Units of the Province of Cebu to prohibit their constituents from flying kites so near electrical posts and kites to avoid entangling.”

The resolution stated that the Province of Cebu recognizes that flying of kites is a way of recreation and has been part of the culture of Filipinos, especially during summer season.

But along with its amusement, the resolution stressed on the danger it can bring to people as well as property that may be damaged when kites get tangled in electrical posts and wires.

“Despite the pleasures it could bring, it will and has been established to be hazardous if flown so near electrical posts and wire to be entangled therewith and may cause fire or other unwanted events,” the resolution read.

The Visayan Electric Company has also been expressing concern about kites flown near electric posts and wires.

“Kite flying is a wholesome pastime especially during summer months. However, if you fly your kites near electrical lines, you are exposing yourself to real danger,” VECO said.

According to VECO, owners of kites which have been entangled in electrical wires and posts should call their office so they can send a technician.  The office reminds the public not to attempt to extract the kites themselves to avoid electrocution.

Apart from posing danger to people, entangled kites may also cause power outages.

In support of VECO’s campaign to regulate flying of kites, the Cebu City government passed a city ordinance a few years back, which allows flying of kites only in open spaces with an area of not less than 3,000 square meters.  It also states that children below 12 years old should always be accompanied by an adult when flying a kite.   (FREEMAN)
