Mayor's truck hit pregnant woman

CEBU, Philippines - Compostela Mayor Joel Quiño confirmed he owns the dump truck that hit and killed a pregnant woman along the national highway of Barangay Sabang, Danao City Saturday afternoon.

Quiño also admitted that the same truck was among the four that were apprehended by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) - Capitol Monitoring Team for violation of Revenue Code of Cebu last Thursday.

It was caught hauling limestone without delivery receipts and was released after Quiño paid the penalty.

The dump truck (YJO 217) driven by Marito Capua of Barangay Dapdap, Compostela was just released from the custody of PENRO-Capitol when it figured in an accident.

As of yesterday, the driver is still detained at Danao City Police station after he voluntarily surrendered to the responding policemen.

"Ang disgrasya man ang nidoul sa amo," Quiño said.

Investigation revealed that the victim, Lani Paje, was riding a motorcycle driven by her husband on the way to Cebu Mitsumi Inc. where she worked.

While traveling, they reportedly hit 17-year-old Deoneda Lauron who suddenly crossed the road.

Upon impact of the collision, the victim was thrown some five meters away and was then hit by the dump truck.

Quiño said he will give financial assistance to the family of the victim.- /MBG (FREEMAN)
