CPA settles conflict between two shipping firms

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu Port Authority has settled the conflict between two shipping firms operating within Tangil, Dumanjug, Cebu to Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental which has reportedly put the safety of the passengers at risk.

CPA port management department director Oscar Lopez yesterday mediated between Island Shipping Corporation and PAR Transport and Development Corporation in order “to buy peace to their business.”

Since November 8, 2012, Island Shipping has been operating a conventional vessel competing with the landing craft tank (LCT) barges of PAR Transport which has been operating for years now in the Tangil-Guihulngan route.

The two shipping firms were in conflict with regards to berthing assignments at the Tangil Port which has five berthing spaces for conventional vessels and LCTs.

Island vessel is docking at the starboard side of PAR Transport at berth 4 which has compromised the safety of Island vessel passengers.

Island vessels shipside at the starboard side of PAR Transport every time they dock at the Tangil Port, posing risks to passengers.

An agreement was signed by representatives of both shipping companies that will put to rest the hassles the passengers have been experiencing since the conflict ensued.

Island Shipping was represented by Dee Gabisay while PAR Transport was represented by Susan Fortich.

It was agreed that Island vessel be assigned to dock at berth 3 starting on Monday while the said berthing space will be vacated by PAR Transport on the same date.

Island Shipping shall also provide mooring buoy at the starboard side of berth 4 earlier than March 2013 because of the southwest monsoon.

Lopez said that the agreement is just temporary as it is still subject for evaluation until next year to come up with a permanent solution.

Last week, passengers of MV Island Express III filed their complaints against PAR Transport before the CPA station in Tangil Port.

They complained that crew of PAR Transport did not allow the craft they were boarding to dock at the port, causing them delay.  (FREEMAN)
